Why I Love Leis

Our Family Tradition

As you can see from this picture from my high school graduation, leis are a big part of our family tradition. I am a third-generation Polynesia American who was born and raised in Texas. Since before I was born and throughout my life, our family has used leis at every important event - weddings, graduations, funerals, parties, you name it. My parents wore leis to their first formal ball together in college and at their wedding.

A Symbol of Aloha

Leis represent the Hawaiian spirit of Aloha, symbolizing love, respect, and connection. Giving or receiving a lei is a meaningful gesture, bringing people together in a spirit of warmth and kindness.

Nature’s Beauty in Every Lei

Polynesian leis are made from carefully selected flowers, leaves, kukui nuts, and sometimes shells, combining vibrant colors and delightful scents. Wearing a lei feels like carrying a piece of Hawaii’s natural beauty with you. Sometimes leis are even made with candy or money, as you can see from my picture. This practice is becoming more common every year.

Celebrating Life’s Moments

As I said earlier, from graduations to weddings, leis play a special role in life’s important events. They mark celebrations with elegance, creating beautiful memories that last long after the day has passed.

Honoring Tradition

Leis are crafted with care and respect, often following techniques passed down through generations. This craftsmanship makes each lei unique, adding to its personal significance.

This is why I am so happy to share this tradition of Aloha with you. At Leis of Polynesia, we’re passionate about creating handmade leis that bring the beauty and Aloha spirit of Hawaii into your life.
